In the Thought Leadership 2.0 panel, Carmen Whitelock (Arup), James Kent (Thornton Tomasetti), and Melanie Kahl (Cannon Design) talk about social media and thought leadership in their respective practices.

As you can imagine, our conference participants had lots of questions on these topics. Watch this video to find out what Carmen, James, and Melanie had to say.

Why Mario Guttman is “Still Coding After All These Years”

Mario Guttman at KA Connect 2012

Mario Guttman started programming when he entered college in 1970. While Mario was trained as an architect, he found a niche at the intersection of architecture and software development when computing seriously entered the AEC industry in the 1980s.

There have been major advances in the state of architectural software over the last thirty years, yet as the Design Applications Research Leader at Perkins+Will, Mario is still programming.

In his KA Connect 2012 talk, “Still Coding After All These Years,” Mario raises the question: “Why are people like me still programming?  What is it that we are doing that goes beyond the “off-the-shelf” software?”

Watch his talk to find out.

Frank Grauman on Marrying Research and Intuition

Frank Grauman at KA Connect 2012

Frank Grauman has had the great fortune to work on innovative projects with visionary clients throughout his career at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

However, in his KA Connect 2012 talk, “Marrying Research and Intuition,” Frank chose to focus on the partnerships with other architects and engineers that have made the work both possible and meaningful.

What’s particularly delightful about Frank’s talk is the way he integrates stories of friendship, collaboration, research, intuition, and passion into a powerful talk about what it means to innovate, and how “innovation often begets innovation.”

Andrew Godwin’s Beautiful Skunkworks Project

Andrew Godwin KA Connect 2012

Andrew Godwin was under the gun. He had 48 hours to build an immersive iPad app for his partners to use in a highly competitive pitch for a new project.

Two days (and several Red Bulls) later, Andrew delivered a compelling app that would become the X factor in helping Make win the job. Andrew’s app helped their client visualize Make’s proposed design solution and demonstrated the innovative capabilities of the firm.

Watch Andrew’s 7-minute KA Connect 2012 talk, “Giving an Old Technology a New Lease on Life,” to hear the whole story and see the app in action.

Jim Wheeler on the Marketing Impact of Giving Research Away

Jim Wheeler at KA Connect 2012

Over the last 20 years, Ayers Saint Gross has built a database of master plans and campus statistics on over 200 of the largest colleges and universities in the country. The database, which Ayers Saint Gross calls “Comparing Campuses,” is an invaluable resource for campus architects, facilities planners, and design firms.

So how much does Ayers Saint Gross charge for access to Comparing Campuses?

Nothing.

In this 16-minute talk, Jim Wheeler tells the story of bringing Comparing Campuses to life, including why he believes the marketing benefits of openly sharing research, even with competitors, far outweigh any potential downsides.

What’s the difference between architects and engineers?

Jim Kent: The Social Nature of Engineers

Jim Kent gave one of the funniest and most insightful talks at KA Connect 2012. In “The Social Nature of Engineers,” Jim suggests that architects and engineers approach social media differently because of the fundamental differences between their natures, passions, and relationship to facts.

Whether you are architect, engineer, or work with them, you’ll find Jim’s reflections on the industry to be both thoughtful and profound.
